Bird Island Tours on Lake Ouachita

Lake Ouachita’s (“Wash-i-ta”) Bird Island has been named an Important Bird Area (IBA) by the National Audubon Society.  In July and August, up to 50,000 purple martins can be seen as they prepare for their migration to Brazil.
Lake Ouachita State Park offers tours to Bird Island several evenings a week during this period.  A park interpreter will take you out to the island as the sun sets and purple martins, egrets, herons and other birds fly low across the lake and then roost for the night.
Tours meet at the Lake Ouachita State Park Marina.  Check the park schedule for dates and times, as they do vary.  Tickets for adults are $9 and can be purchased at the park visitor center. Space is limited, and this tour is very popular.  If your Hot Springs Arkansas travel plans include bird watching, we will be happy to make reservations for you!
