When the calendar flips to September, we all start thinking about cooler weather, pumpkin spice, and fall foliage. It's also a great time to plan an autumn escape! Did you know that only a few regions in the Northern Hemisphere enjoy brilliant fall foliage like Arkansas? While nature keeps its own schedule, peak color in our area typically happens in late October to mid-November.
Whether you want to hike trails, attend local festivals, or relax with a view, here are the best local spots to experience autumn in the Hot Springs area:
Garvan Woodland Gardens
With 4½ miles of wooded shoreline along Lake Hamilton, this 210-acre botanical garden offers an unforgettable autumn display. Stroll through formal gardens blooming with fall mums and roses, explore the Garden of the Pine Wind with its vibrant Japanese maples, or wander shaded forest trails lined with camellias.
Planning Tip: The Gardens are open during daytime hours through November 20. On November 21, they switch to evening-only hours as they transition into their annual Holiday Lights display! (Remember, two tickets to Garvan Gardens are included when you book our Unplug & Unwind package).
Panoramic Overlooks & Local Parks
- Hot Springs National Park: For 360-degree views of the colorful canopy, visit the Hot Springs Mountain Tower. Hike to it via the Peak Trail behind historic Bathhouse Row, or take the scenic drive to the top. For a different perspecitve, make the short drive up West Mountain to watch the colors across the valley (and watch planes take off & land at Hot Springs Memorial Field).
- Hickory Nut Mountain Vista: Located a short drive west on Highway 270, this overlook sits 1000 feet above Lake Ouachita's shoreline with beautiful panoramic lake views. (Note: The final 4-mile stretch up to the vista is an unpaved gravel road).
- DeGray Lake State Park: Just down the road from us in Bismarck, Caddo Bend offers views across the lake. Another favorite spot for our guests is the Shouse Ford beach and picnic area. This is a perfect spot to have a quiet picnic, watch for migrating birds, and catch a sunset.

Mountain Biking & Fall Trails
If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, bring your bikes and watch the colors breeze by on one of three IMBA Epic Rides in our area. Tiffany’s Bed and Breakfast is centrally located within 25 miles of Iron Mountain Trail, Lake Ouachita Vista Trail (LOViT), and Cedar Glades Trail. - Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival (October 9-17): The oldest all-documentary film festival in North America brings world-class nonfiction storytelling to town during early fall color.
- Garvan Gardens Holiday Lights (November 21 – December 31): After a day of leaf-peeping through the area, head to the Gardens in the evening. Nearly twenty acres come alive each night with over 8 million lights incorporated into animated displays, giant topiaries, and festive music.
